The course of the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) in the construction sector – “Ultrasonic method – level 1” was held from August 26 to 30 in the training center of the Institute of Mechanics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
“We are launching one of the specific trainings that can give all of you a great deal of theoretical and practical knowledge about the inspection of building structures using the ultrasonic method. I hope that the course will go well and you will gain knowledge that will be very useful in your work,” said at the opening of the training, engineer Lyubka Deneva, head of the “Digitalization in Construction” department at the Bulgarian Construction Chamber.
According to the leading lecturer Associate Professor Yordan Mirchev from the Institute of Mechanics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the especially valuable contribution of the course is that it provides knowledge on the elimination of defects and problems in construction through the methods of non-destructive testing.
The training “Ultrasonic method – level 1” is present, which includes the acquisition of knowledge about ultrasonic control and increasing the qualification of specialists for testing and subsequent control of composite materials for construction, constructed from a concrete matrix. Construction specialists who have successfully completed the course can be certified in Bulgaria according to the international standard for ultrasonic testing in the field of construction for level 1. The requirement for training participants is to have at least a secondary technical education and at least 6 months of professional experience in applying methods for non-destructive testing of construction sites and their elements. The course is designed for technical experts in municipalities, in construction and in supervisory companies, performing ultrasonic testing of elements of the building stock and various structures. These can be workers in small and medium-sized enterprises in the construction sector, in small companies with an average market capitalization, as well as in public sector organizations (but for their non-economic activities).
In addition to Associate Professor Mirchev, the lecturers in the ultrasonic method training are proven professors at the Institute of Mechanics of the BAS. The 5-day course includes an introduction to ultrasonic non-destructive testing methods for composite material based on concrete matrix and structures, and learning the relevant terminology. The participants become familiar with the physical principles for applying the method, with data and characteristics of the tested products and structures, as well as with applying the method and testing technologies. Practical work with the technical means of testing – ultrasonic flaw detector, ultrasonic thickness gauge and feelers, as well as familiarization with all stages of the process, are also part of the training. And its final part is the acquisition of skills to evaluate the conformity of the tested composite material.
